St. Patrick’s Project

March-fog

It is warming up here. The fog is dense and the rivers are overflowing with melting snow and recent rain. It is a world of gray, white and black. But in the studio things are just the opposite. This week we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, so you the know the color green has to play a starring role.

Hey! What’s in the basket? It’s our St. Patrick’s project… a pretty little bread warmer. This holiday is celebrated with many traditional treats, like corned beef and cabbage, dark beer and of course, Irish Soda bread.

Isn’t that a perfect symbol for cozy comfort ! Similar to a scone this soda bread is sweet and filled with raisins. Laying on a blanket lined with green Curlicue fabric from the Early Birds line.

This reversible bread warmer has a lovely shape, like a big X made of graceful curves. It is about 17″ square

and has a basic “pillow” construction.Bread Warmer- Sassaman-fabric

The details add some extra character. A green pearl cotton running stitch accents the silhouette and also attach the magenta wool balls which help to hold the blanket more tightly around the bread. Now that these photos have been posted, guess what I’m having with my tea this afternoon!

Snow Day!

Studio 3:5:2013

What a marvelous day! The snow began about 7:00 this morning and there are predictions of 10 inches of new snow. So we are looking forward to being stranded in the studio for at least two days, Yippee!! So I am a happy camper and dedicating my time to some serious quilting.  In anticipation I started a new small piece yesterday and continue to quilt my abstract sampler.

But before I get down to stitching I wanted to share some spring colors and Easter finery.

Easter is early this year so now is the time to brighten up the wardrobe. It is so nice that men aren’t afraid of  pretty colors these days. I love to see guys in pink and purple. In fact, this pink shirt is directly from my husbands closet. The ties are all made with purple fabrics from the Early Birds fabric collection for FreeSpirit.

I like this simple tie pattern… just tie, no bow. Very dapper!

This is the same pattern with a different finish. It was centered on the large checked fabric so the two halves are symmetrical.

This bow tie is for a man with confidence and a good sense of humor!

This version is very pleasing. I know my Greg will be sporting one of these in the Easter Parade.

OK, back to stitching and dreaming.

Red to the Rescue

Monday, February 4th, 2013

As you may know, this is fabric designing time for me. I always look forward to a couple of months of divine isolation in to studio as the ideas incubate. Once the theme of a line becomes apparent everything starts to fall into place. It is hard, often frustrating, work!! I tell my students that no one just sits down and “barfs art”! There are so many options, trial and errors, doubts and rejections, not to mention all the sleepless nights during this period of slow progress. But hopefully all the viewer sees is a glorious end result.

This is the period I am dwelling in at the moment… the doubting, sorting and concentration. This season it has been particularly challenging, especially since the March 1st deadline is a month sooner than usual. Everyday I tell myself, “today is the day that the muse will beat me mercilessly over the head and all the answers will come!” HA! I’m still waiting for it all to gel… maybe today?

But it is also the deep heart of winter and this week we have finally had enough snow to make it really look and feel like the winter season. I love February because the Valentines shot of red is a traditional reminder that spring will be with us shortly. I’ve always felt that Valentine’s Day was brilliantly placed in the calendar year. February also happens to be our wedding anniversary, another excuse to celebrate.

So this week we have whipped up some crafty Valentine ideas. If you are suffering from cabin fever these projects could provide a little distraction and a lot of exhilarating color. We started with some plain brown cardboard boxes from Hobby Lobby and covered them with fabrics from the Early Birds collection.

The oval box makes a cheerful container for Jaci’s pretty Valentine cookies. Jaci is “The Cookie Lady” in town and keeps the citizens of Woodstock well sweetened all year round. There’s nothing happier than Valentine cookies! The oval lid suits the motif nicely.

Wine and champagne are also traditional treats for heartfelt celebrations. This is my all time favorite label on a bottle of wine. In fact, this now empty bottle holds pride of place in our “cabinet of wonders”. Wouldn’t that  design make a fabulous applique? The wine caddy, too, is decoupaged with the same fabric, but with a coordinating pink cap. I’m hoping these projects and colors have helped to buoy your sagging winter spirits .

Baby, it’s cold outside!!

Monday, January 21st, 2013

There is a dusting of snow and it’s shockingly cold outside! That’s fine if you get to stay inside and cozy, but if you have things to do it’s time to get serious!! Being a Midwesterner I know the adage, “there’s no such thing as cold weather, only inappropriate clothing”. But I would add… If you have to dress for warmth you may as well look good at the same time!  So we whipped up some warm but wild chapeaux in celebration of the season.

All of these hats were made with Vogue Accessories pattern V7981, Early Birds fabric and modeled by my young friend, Elizabeth. In the photo above she is wearing the classic hunters hat, we call it the Elmer Fudd model. First she has her ear flaps tied up, but then happily lowered her fleece lined flaps to keep snug.

Here is a sassy little beanie lined with peachy pink fleece, a perfect color to liven up a winter day. I think the combination of pink and black is both fun and elegant.

This red wrap-around hood is a romantic way to fend off the winter blues. Again, it is fleece lined inside and around the face. It is simply quilted and fastens with two dots of Velcro under the chin. What fun to have such sunny fabrics to fondle on a cold winter day!

PS… are you working on your Patchwork Sassaman Style challenge quilt top? There’s still time to stitch one up… the deadline for photos is this Friday , January 25. You could win a stack of Early Birds fabric!! For more details go to the Dragon Threads Blog.

Winter Sunshine

Monday, January 14th, 2013

We are all spending a lot more time indoors these chilly days, so it’s a good incentive to rearrange the furniture, change the duvet covers and generally spiff things up. One of the easiest ways to brighten a tired environment is to add some color, of course, and big pillows are a perfect vehicle for dramatic change.

All of these pillows are made with Early Birds fabric from FreeSpirit. This one is made with the Berry Patch Border print in the Strawberry colorway. The print is dramatic enough in itself so it doesn’t require elaborate piecing… just an extra strip of pink Curlicue at the top and bottom. The big bows at the top add the icing.

This fun pillow also has a tied closure. But this time the ties are multicolored, which definitely reveals that the seamstress has a sense of humor. The poka-dots also add a feeling of playfulness.

This pillow uses a different colorway of the previous fabric, Strawberry Serenade. The design really gives us a cheerful taste of Spring. The main fabric is framed with the Cheeky Checks and trimmed with optimistic ball fringe. Ball fringe always makes me happy. In fact, all these big pillows have the ability to to make you smile on a cold winter day… think Valentines.

And, of course, we couldn’t resist making them reversible, too!

There’s still time to submit your entry for the Patchwork Sassaman Style contest. I can’t wait to see what you send us!! For more details visit Dragon Threads.

New Life for Cozy Wraps

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

We have had lots of house guests the past few weeks. I love to treat my friends to cheerful and cozy rooms, because as a frequent traveler I know how much a little care and coddling is appreciated. Since we like to play host to visitors we are always on the look out for more blankets to keep everyone comfortable.

My husband, Greg is a wonderful scavenger and checks in with thrift shops regularly. He has a nose for quality and the patience to root around to find it. Here you see three wool blankets that he discovered. Great colors! But as with many older blankets the edges were tired and torn. So we gave there beauties a new life by finishing them with new fabrics… from the FreeSpirit Sassaman archive, of course!

We also decided that it would be much more exciting to use a different but coordinating fabric on each end. Picking the fabric was the best part and it’s nice to have these little pieces of design history sprinkled throughout the house. Don’t these blankets fit our color scheme to perfectly?

But we didn’t want to forget the royal heritage of these well crafted warmers, so we kept the original labels intact. I love the combination of old and new and the concept of recycling a perfectly useful and handsome object.

Burnt Toast, too, has an eye for comfort, as all cats do. We know where she is headed for the morning catnap!

PS… Don’t forget about the Patchwork Sassaman Style contest this month! You still have plenty of time to whip up that 1+4 Patch top to enter. Go to Dragon Threads to read all about it!

New Colors for the New Year!

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

Happy New Year! I am looking forward to the coming year with renewed optimism and excitement. As always, the changing of the calendar is a natural time for reflection. My review has made me determined to be more organized, efficient, profitable and a few sizes smaller. Sound familiar? I guess it’s the same every year. One of the best ways to encourage this positive attitude is with a new dose of color!! And since we used the red and blue checks and poka dots for our table runner last week, it seemed natural to use the fresh plum colorway to reinvigorate the bed room for sweet dreaming this week.

We have duvets on all the beds, summer and winter. I have made covers for them all with my FreeSpirit fabrics, of course, and with the same basic pattern. The center panel is simply a selvedge to selvedge cut of fabric bordered by two coordinating panels. It is reversible, too, so I can carry the color theme through both sides. I have such a “healthy” collection, twelve years of Sassaman stash, that I’m not limited to the latest designs, but can pull out some past favorites, too.

For this side of the cover all fabrics are from the current Early Birds line. We have added the plum Prairie Poppy for a lively buffer between the dots and the checks. The poppy is also featured on the large pillow. The other yellow pillow is made with the tulip design from Jane’s Paradise Garden line. The pretty pink pillows use the Early Birds pink Curlicue with a vintage stripe and a checked edge.

The reverse side is the same format, but with plum Primrose Posy as the primary fabric, another vintage Sassaman stripe and more poka dots. The pillows work nicely with both sides. Is there any doubt that going to bed in our house is a happy occasion? Imagine my striped pajamas in the mix! Greg calls me “Mrs. Seuss”.

“Color” is the way to my heart… it refreshes, inspires and delights me. Nicely ironed pillowcases make me happy, too. Not a bad way to begin the New Year!

Festive Table Dressing

Monday, December 24th, 2012

Happy Holidays everyone! We were lucky to get a dusting of snow for a traditional white Christmas here. Inside we are keeping the holiday decor simple this year! The house is small so it just takes a few tweaks to alter its attitude. I love the joyful combination of red and white any time of year, but it is especially welcome in the gray days of winter.

Greg found this wonderful table in a resale shop. It’s just what we’ve been looking for… large, clean and not too precious to use. So this is its first Christmas with us and I was excited to dress it up for the holidays.

I started by making three runners, a long one for the center of the table in the Early Birds Strawberry Poka Dot fabric and two shorter ones in the Strawberry Cheeky Checks. I quilted then with a thick denim stitch so the thread would show up nicely on both sides.

The napkins are made with the reversible Pint Size Party Napkin Pattern in the dots and the checks, too, but with Strawberry Prairie Poppies for the reverse side. Although the Poppies are traditional Christmas colors, they are lighter and brighter variations lending a contemporary feeling.

Each runner is pointed at both ends and each point has a button hole to hold interchangeable decorations. I made simple yarn tassels for this variation, but I could button on something different for other occasions… hearts or rosettes for Valentines, for example.

Here you can see it viewed from the little loft above. I think the simplicity and color make this a very inviting setting. But being a Libra I had to make this project appropriate for my friends who celebrate different holidays, too, so…

I made each runner reversible. On this side we’re using the Blueberry color ways of the dots and checks. I think this is just as pretty as the red table… and a nice excuse to get out some Willowware.  Just an easy change of color can really make a difference in a room. There is a Plum color way of these fabrics, too, that could be fabulous for a spring table setting.

These napkins used the Bleeding Hearts and Iris fabric from my previous FreeSpirit collection, Garden Divas. The little bit of contrasting color adds some excitement. Notice that in both versions we have paired the checked napkins with the dotted runners and visa versa.

Don’t the cyclamen go nicely with the blue, too? We could even use both the red and blue runners and napkins together for a July 4th event, as well.

In any case, I’m hoping that this post adds a little more color and light to your holiday season. Don’t forget to take a little time out for fabric fondling this week, too!

Easter Greetings!

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

Happy Easter everyone! I hope the Easter Bunny put all the dark chocolate in your basket!

This week we are celebrating the season with a new table setting done in Early Birds fabric, of course.
The scene is filled with plenty of easy “do-it-yourself” projects. Let’s begin with the basic tablecloth of the Pink Curlicue fabric… just measure, cut and hem. Over sized ball fringe would be a perfect finish on the edges.

Melissa Peda’s table runner is so cute! It is made with six inch blocks that feature fussy cut Bleeding Hearts (from the Strawberry Serenade fabric) down the center and Primrose Posy triangles down the side. The bright white and blue blocks add a sense of humour.

And I love the addition of the buttons. Look at the detail below of the white baby buttons dangling from each blossom and the yellow daisy buttons in each corner. Our bleeding hearts are the pride of the garden right now.

The lamp shade is covered in the red Poka Dots fabric, which always make me think of Betty Boop and gives me a chuckle.

The elegant curtains are made with Prairie Poppies in the blueberry colorway. They look great against the gold wall.

The English Tea Cozy also models the Strawberry Serenade fabric, anchored by a band of blue Poka Dots and topped with a yellow yoyo and felt beads.

And finally, we have Melissa’s little pin cushion pillow. It is done with tiny cross stitches in the letter “J”and surrounded with the Prairie Poppy design, in the strawberry colorway this time.

I know there will be little time for sewing today. But perhaps tomorrow when the guests have gone and all the dishes are done you can escape into the sewing room and indulge in some fabric fondling.
